VIP guests of Baroness Scotland of Asthal

This morning we were VIP guests of Baroness Scotland of Asthal, the most senior Commonwealth official.

Addressing this year’s contestants at The Worshipful Company of Skinners - one of the Livery Companies of the City of London - the Baroness spoke about the importance of meeting people, coming together and to use Miss World as a springboard for action.

She said: “It is a huge pleasure to meet you all because I know each and every one of you has been on a remarkable journey taking on the role as an ambassador for your country. We are living in troubled and troubling times when friendship, understanding and peace is an aspiration. You have an opportunity to get to know one and other and to make the things that bind us even tighter.

“The world needs you to act in order to make it better. I hope that you will identify for yourselves what your talents are, that you will own those talents and nurture them and then use it for the benefit of others because you can do anything you choose. This world can be exactly as you would like it to be but only if you choose to make it so, I hope each and every one of you will make that choice. I have tried to and so far it hasn't gone too bad, but I could do with a bit of help from all of you...The Commonwealth is made up of 53 countries, 2.4 billion people and 60% of them are under the age of 30...and rumour has it, you are too.”

Baroness Scotland confirmed that in June 2020 the Commonwealth is going to be in Rwanda and said she hoped to see Miss World Rwanda there, she concluded: “I hope when you look back on your year, you will see it as just the beginning of a lifelong journey of service, commitment and development for your countries and the friendships that you make during this journey, will last a lifetime. Remember, beauty is about the heart and purpose.”

Miss World Rwanda, representing the Commonwealth contestants, said: “It is a real honour to be here today and on behalf of all these nations we thank you for taking your time to host us and to sharing your knowledge. We are really grateful for these beautiful memories and experience that will stay with us forever. Each one of us has created a ‘Beauty With A Purpose’ project in our own counties. Some of us are fighting against malnutrition, for women and children's rights. The most beautiful thing about Miss World is ‘Beauty With A Purpose.”

Representing the Commonwealth was Miss World Ambassadors from:

Antigua and Barbuda

British Virgin Islands

Cook Islands

New Zealand

Sierra Leone

South Africa

Sri Lanka

Trinidad and Tobago

Baroness Scotland of Asthal is the second Secretary-General from the Caribbean and the first woman to hold the post.

Then it was off for brunch at Coq d'Argent, a restaurant in the heart of London's Bank area, with panoramic rooftop views of the City.
