Miss World India 2019 Crowned

Suman Rao was crowned Miss World India 2019 on Saturday 15 June at a star-studded ceremony held at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Indoor Stadium in Mumbai.

Crowned by last year’s winner, Anukreethy Vas from Tamil Nadu and reigning Miss World, Vanessa Ponce de León, the 20-year old chartered accountant student from the North Western state of Rajasthan, describes herself as a ‘gentle kind and humble person who tries the best to achieve what can be achievable and make impossible to possible.

She said: "When you get yourself determined towards a particular goal in life, every single nerve and fibre of your body starts working into that direction for a victorious journey."

Suman’s ‘Beauty With A Purpose’ Project Soch, is dedicated to spreading awareness about gender equality, a campaign she started at home with her own father. Since winning her state final, Suman has visited local villages and schools to talk to boys, girls, men and women about the importance of standing up for their rights and opportunities and to work hard for It.

Suman said: "I come from a community where gender inequality and other stereotypes are still into existence, so when I saw two primary choices in front of me, to either accept the conditions those were in existence or to take the responsibility for changing the same, I chose the latter one."

The prestigious event was judged by reigning Miss World Vanessa Ponce de León alongside Bollywood choreographer Remo D'Souza, actress Huma Qureshi, Chitrangada Singh, fashion designer Falguni Shane Peacocka and Indian footballer Sunil Chhetri among others.

During the evening, Bollywood stars Katrina Kaif, Vicky Kaushal and Mouni Roy enthralled the audience with their dance performances. The event was hosted by the former Miss World Manushi Chhillar, Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar and actor Manish Paul. Manushi also presented the 'Beauty With A Purpose Award' to Lakshmi Menon for her project Nirurava to provide access to safe drinking water to a tribal community in Kerala.

Suman will now enjoy a year of appearances in her new role and will represent India along with 130 contestants from around the world at the month-long festival and 69th Miss World Final.

The highly-anticipated Miss World final show will be broadcast globally to over 150 countries, where global fans can watch reigning Miss World, Vanessa Ponce de León, pass the crown to the 69th Miss World.
