Miss World Gibraltar 2019 Crowned

Celine Bolaños has been crowned Miss World Gibraltar 2019 on Saturday 1 June at the national grand final. All the action from the glittering ‘Gothic Glam’ themed spectacular was broadcast live on GBC TV from the Special Olympics Sports Complex.

As well as being crowned Miss Gibraltar, she was also awarded Miss Top Model and Best Interview.

The 22-year-old corporate service administrator said: “I feel it’s a good opportunity to step out of my comfort zone, improve my self-confidence and public speaking as well as provide me with leadership and communication skills. I can’t wait to represent the Beauty and Culture of Gibraltar.”

Gibraltar has a long history with Miss World. The first Miss Gibraltar contest was staged in 1959 and was organised by the Vox Newspaper. Back then it was 23-year-old Viola Abudarham who took to the stage and then went on to represent Gibraltar on the world stage at London’s Lyceum Ballroom. However, their biggest success was to come 50 years later when Kaiane Aldorino Lopez made history and was crowned Miss World 2009 in Johannesburg, South Africa at the age of 23.

As soon as her name was announced, Gibraltar burst into celebration as people took to the streets. Supporters waved the flag of Gibraltar, chanted as cars honked their horns as celebrations climaxed with a firework display from the harbour. Gibraltar’s Chief Minister hailed her win as a ‘wonderful achievement for her and for Gibraltar’ and promised a ‘homecoming fit for a queen’.

Two years later in July 2011, Kaiane became the first women to receive the Freedom of the City of Gibraltar and awarded the Medallion of Honour, both honours by a unanimous vote in the Gibraltar Parliament.

Then at just 30 years old, she went on to hold the ceremonial position of Mayor of Gibraltar from 2017 to 2019, making her the youngest mayor in the territory's history, and only the third woman to take on the role. Local media once described her as ‘the most beautiful mayor in the world’.

Following in footsteps of Viola and Kaiane, Celine will now enjoy a year of appearances in her new role and will represent Gibraltar along with 130 contestants from around the world at the month-long festival and 69th Miss World Final.

The highly-anticipated Miss World final show will be broadcast globally to over 150 countries, where global fans can watch reigning Miss World, Vanessa Ponce de León, pass the crown to the 69th Miss World.
