Miss World Northern Ireland 2019 Crowned

Lauren Leckey was crowned Miss World Northern Ireland 2019 by her predecessor, Katharine Walker, on Monday 6 May. First Runner Up, Chloe Spence and Second Runner Up, Alexandra Burton, will support Lauren during her reign. Twenty four finalists, who were selected through 12 heats across Northern Ireland, competed for the title.

Lauren was awarded a prize package of: a modelling contract with the organisers of Miss Northern Ireland- ACA Models, a mini cooper car, a year’s supply of beauty treatments, a wardrobe of designer clothes by Rosie’s Closet and the honour of representing Northern Ireland at the Miss World contest, in an all expenses paid trip.

Speaking to the Belfast Telegraph, Lauren said: "I don't think it's fully sunk in yet. I never saw myself winning…You dream of it, you think it would be amazing but if anyone had ever told me, when I was Miss Spice (Templepatrick), that I would be Miss Northern Ireland, I never would have believed it…When I think back to our boot camps, with Alison Clarke teaching us how to walk and stand properly and even how to look nice in the photos... I can now see how much has changed."

She says that her parents are 'over the moon' at her achievement. She also revealed that her father, who was live streaming the event, 'dropped his camera, as soon as he heard my name being called out!'

Lauren is a 20-year-old Sales Rep from Stoneyford in Co Antrim. She describes herself as 'hardworking, sociable and creative'. In her interview for the contest, she was asked what would make her stand out from the other contestants.

Lauren explained: "In 2005, my dad was in a motorbike accident and as a result is paralysed from the waist down. Growing up so close to someone with a physical disability has taught me so much. It has given me so much compassion and understanding for people living with physical disabilities."

Lauren expressed her “Miss Northern Ireland experience" in a poem. “All the girls really liked it. They said it was a poem about us", she explained. Lauren continued: “The competition is not just a beauty pageant, it's a role - it's about being someone for other people to look up to. It's not just for the year but for years and years to come. That's a responsibility I'm going to take very seriously…I want to show that you can do anything if you put your mind to it."

Maria will now enjoy a year of appearances in her new role and will represent Northern Ireland, along with 130 contestants from around the world, at the three-week festival and 69th Miss World Final.

The highly-anticipated Miss World final show will be broadcast globally to over 150 countries, where global fans can watch reigning Miss World, Vanessa Ponce de León, pass the crown to the 69th Miss World.
