Miss World joins Variety Telethon in Iowa to raise more than $4 million US dollars

Being in Iowa has been one of the most memorable of my life. Knowing that I’m treading in the footsteps of so many former Miss Worlds, I felt so honoured to be in Des Moines, Iowa, USA for the 45thannual Variety Children's Charity telethon.

Joining me for this important fundraising weekend was Miss World 2016, Stephanie Del Valle, Miss World Americas 2018, Solaris Barba 2018, Miss World Asia 2018, Nicolene Pichapa Limsnukan, Miss World Caribbean 2018, Kadijah Robinson and Miss World Oceania 2018, Jessica Tyson.

The telethon started on Saturday 4 March at 7 pm and ended Sunday 5 March at 6 pm. During the weekend we took thousands of phone calls, there was live entertainment on stage, and specially adapted bikes being donated to kids who need them.

It was such a rewarding experience to have been invited to join a celebrity cast of volunteers and donate our time to be part of such a great charity and know that we have made a difference to lives of so many children.

After a couple of long days and a lot of fun and hard work, Variety was able to raise $4,082,628 USD for the children of Iowa. This is an incredible amount, it was such a heart-warming experience to see so many people come together to help those in need.

Thank you all so much at Variety in Iowa for making this experience so memorable and for helping the lives of so many every year.

The Children’s Charity Telethon Producer Stan W Reynolds thanked all the Miss World winners: “The fact you have travelled from all over the world just to help the children of Iowa will live in our hearts forever - we cannot thank you enough.

Before the telethon, we had the privilege to visit the Blank Children’s hospital that had already received donations from Variety and to see how these places use the money to benefit the lives of the children of Iowa.

Miss World Oceania 2018, Jess Tyson commented: “One of my favourite parts about being in Des Moines was seeing how well the community came together to support the children through the Variety Telethon. I’ve never seen so many people, organisations and businesses come together and go out of their way to help others.

“It's amazing to see how many children benefit each year from the annual fundraiser. Over the weekend we were invited to visit some of the projects that have received funding. These included the local children’s hospital in Des Moines, Girls Rock, which is a group supporting girls and young women and programme that donates bikes and equipment to children with disabilities, so they can join in everyday activities or sports.

“From this experience I’m planning to start my own online or social media telethon here in New Zealand to raise funds for my charity and Beauty With A Purpose project, Brave.”

Since 1975, Iowans have joined together to contribute their time, talent and hearts to the annual Variety Telethon. Telethon is an entertainment showcase that serves as Variety’s largest fundraiser and has raised more than $113 USD million to date.

For the more than 20 years, Beauty With A Purpose has supported this annual fundraising event.
